Chosen by God

To those who are elect exiles of the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with his blood: May grace and peace be multiplied to you. (1 Peter 1:1–2)

Here in the opening greeting of Peter’s letter, he teaches us 4 things about the glorious doctrine of election…

I. IT ORIGINATES IN THE FOREKNOWLEDGE OF GOD THE FATHER

“elect…according to the foreknowledge of God the Father…”

II. IT BECOMES A REALITY TO US BY THE SANCTIFYING WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

“elect…in the sanctification of the Spirit…”

III. IT CULMINATES IN OUR CLEANSING AND CONVERSION TO JESUS

“elect…for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with his blood…”

IV. IT OPENS FOR US THE FLOODGATES OF GOD’S GRACE AND PEACE

“May grace and peace be multiplied to you,” or, “May grace and peace be yours in fullest measure.”
